Learning to ride an ATV is no easy feat. Unlike other off-roading vehicles on the market, these machines don’t have controls similar to that of a car or motorcycle, which a majority of people are already familiar with. As a result, it can often feel like you’re starting from scratch, and some riders may even get discouraged. However, there’s no need to get down. We’ve written up a number of helpful tips below to help you get the hang of riding your new ATV in no time flat!

Read Your Manual

ATVs can vary quite a bit from model to model. As a result, not all ATV controls will look the same. Some may appear as levers, others as switches or pedals depending on the type of model you have. To ensure you know exactly where everything is and how to use it, be sure to take some time to read over your ATV’s manual before you start your engine.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Learning to ride an ATV will take some real practice, so remember to be patient. As a first-time rider, you’ve got a lot to learn, but it won’t be long before you’re tearing up tough terrain and off-road trails! Until then, try to find a flat area with evenly packed dirt to take your first ride. Remember to take things very slowly, as these machines can accelerate very quickly. Practice stopping and accelerating your machine, making wide turns, and shifting your ATV into different gears. Once you’ve got the basics down you’ll be able to move on to harder tasks, such as leaning into turns and getting over inclines.
