DIY Motorcycle Maintenance
Whether it’s your perfect getaway or your primary mode of transportation, your motorcycle is a part of you and your life. You’ll want to make sure it’s properly taken care of so it will last for years to come. There are some basic motorcycle maintenance practices you can be doing on a regular basis from the comfort of your home. These take a little bit of time but can lead to a world of difference for your bike. We’ve listed them here, so take a look and make sure they’re incorporated into your bike-check routine. But even with all this, you’ll still need to take your motorcycle in for periodic checks by professional maintenance workers. Schedule your checkup appointment with Sky Powersports Lakeland in Lakeland, Florida. We proudly serve the areas of Tampa, Orlando, and Brandon, Florida.
Keep it Clean
First and foremost, the easiest and most basic way to care for your bike is to make sure it’s clean. Not only will this leave a good impression on everyone who sees it, but it will prevent grime related problems from festering. You might also spot problems as you’re cleaning that might have gone unnoticed otherwise. Plus, it’s a good way to prep for the next step, as you won’t want to get dust and other particulates sucked in with fresh oil.
Change your Oil
Oil changes are just as important to motorcycles as they are to cars. The recommended interval for motorcycle oil changes is every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. Not everyone agrees on the kind of oil you should be using on motorcycles, so the best way to know is to check with the bike’s manufacturer. And remember that this process includes draining the used oil, replacing the oil filter, and filling the oil port. Be sure not to overfill. Use the dipstick to check the level and quality(or, if your bike has a viewing window, just take a quick peek through there).
Check the Chain
Chains need to be well lubricated and pulled to the right tautness. Lubricate them often, preferably before every ride or at least as often as you need to fill up with gas. There are commercial chain sprays that will also help you get the job done quickly and effectively. Make sure your chains aren’t so loose that they slip off, and not so tight that the bike doesn’t run properly. The chain should sag ¾” to 1 ¼” at the midpoint.
Pump those Tires
Your tires are an essential part of your bike so you’ll want to make sure they’re up for any challenge. Keep a tire pressure gauge with you at all times and check the pressure every time before using your bike. Not only do improperly inflated tires pose a blowout risk, but they wear out quicker. While you’re checking the tire pressure, also examine the treads and general wear on the tire. Replace all problem tires sooner rather than later. The longer you push your luck, the more dangerous it becomes for you and other drivers.
Cables and Hardware
Make it a habit to give your cables and other hardware a once over with every bike check you do. They’re in charge of keeping you in control, so you’ll want to ensure they’re going to perform well. Look for frayed wires and cables, loose parts, and other potential problems. When it comes to nuts and bolts, you’ll have to take it a step further: you need to go through with a wrench and check for yourself that everything is properly tightened. A lookover won’t do in this case.
Take Care of your Battery
Your battery needs to be checked with every oil change. As easy as it is to forget about your battery, your bike will let you know the hard way when it’s beyond repair. Make sure the electrolytes are at the right level and look for cracks or other vibration-induced issues. This is especially true if you install aftermarket lights. Top off any fluids that need to be topped off and charge your battery when it needs it. If you’re storing your bike, remove your battery and store it somewhere warm on a non-conductive surface.
This may seem like a lot to do for such a little vehicle (compared to the ones you’ll be riding next to), but these basic maintenance steps are important for your bike’s longevity and for a safe ride.
