Your Essential Boat Safety Equipment Kit
Most of us get into boating because it’s fun and relaxing, but it’s critical to be prepared for emergencies. While the odds are slim you’ll face any dire problems, it’s your responsibility as a boat owner to be prepared. Here’s a list of what you need to stay safe on your boat so you’re prepared for an emergency.
Personal Floatation Devices
There must be a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on board for each person. Kids should have PFDs in kid’s sizes and should wear them all the time. For adults, it depends on conditions – and your passengers should understand that if the captain says to put it on, they need to comply. Choose PFDs with attached whistles for added safety. There should also be a throwable life ring for anyone who falls overboard to grab.
First-Aid Kit
Keep a fully stocked first aid kit to address problems like slivers, insect bites, sunburn, sprains, and more. Make sure it stays dry and replace items when they expire. Include things like disinfectants, bandages, tweezers, pain medications, emergency space blankets, and burn treatments.
Fire Extinguisher
Every vessel that has an engine or a cooking apparatus needs to have a fire extinguisher. Fuel for both of those functions is (obviously, right?) highly flammable. In other words, the only exceptions are rowboats, canoes, and kayaks!
Distress Flares and Signals
All boats should carry both visual and audible signaling devices. Visual signals include pyrotechnic flares, strobe lights, and flags. Auditory signals include horns and whistles. It’s worth noting that signal flares expire after 42 months, so replace them regularly and dispose of expired flares as the hazardous chemicals they are.
VHF Radio
VHF stands for Very High Frequency. These radios enable instant communication between vessels and with marinas, bridges, and the United States Coast Guard. A VHF radio is truly a lifeline in an emergency situation.
